My Physical Fitness Challenge

On Feb 23rd, 2009 I wrote in my blog that on Feb 11th, 2009 I had started walking every day in order to increase my fitness.
On Feb 18th, 2009 I started to eat clean and I am still eating clean. I carry a little notebook in my shirt pocket and I write down everytime I eat and what I ate. I consult the book before eating to make sure that I should be eating and that I am not over eating. I seem to live on baked chicken, tuna, baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, salad and fresh fruit.
I have exercised all but 5 days in the last 47 days and I had a starting weight of 363.5 lbs. I would love to be 200 lbs, so I was 163.5 lbs over weight.
I have now lost 15.75 lbs. which is approximately 9.6% of my challenge in 47 days. At this rate I may make my goal around June of 2010, if my feet don't fall off.

Exploring Nevada's State Parks

Our good friends John and Wendy Freeman were in Las Vegas last week and
again we spent a couple of days exploring Nevada. On Wednesday we went to
Valley of Fire State park located abut 55 miles north of Las Vegas.
Valley of Fire State Park is located only six miles from
Lake Mead and 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via Interstate 15 and on
exit 75. Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest and largest state park,
dedicated 1935. The valley derives its name from the red sandstone
formations and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert. Ancient trees and
early man are represented throughout the park by areas of petrified wood
and 3,000 year-old Indian petroglyph. Popular activities include camping,
hiking, picnicking and photography. The park offers a full-scale visitor
center with extensive interpretive displays. Several group use areas are
also available. The park is open all year.
On Thursday we went to Spring Mountain Ranch State
which is located within the Red Rock Canyon National
Conservation Area, beneath the colorful cliffs of the magnificent Wilson
Range. The many springs in these mountains provided water for Paiute
Indians and later brought mountain men and early settlers to the area.
This 520 acre oasis was developed into a combination working ranch and
luxurious retreat by a string of owners who have given the area a long
and colorful history. Past owners of the ranch included Chester Lauck of
the comedy team "Lum & Abner," German actress Vera Krupp,
and millionaire Howard Hughes. Vera Krupp was robbed of teh famous Krupp
Diamond while staying at the ranch. The 33 carat diamond was recovered on
the east coast and after Krupp died Richard Burton bought the diamond to
give to Elizabeth Taylor.
Janice and myself love the time we spend with John and Wendy when
they come to Vegas, I only wish we had a dozen more friends that are so
great to spend time with.
